I have lots of older cassettes and long play 78 records
and I was wondering if someone can tell me if it is
possible to do this through my computer? If possible can
you explain how to do it. I am currently using a
Deminsion 4550 with windows xp. My system is approx. 7
months old. Thank You for any help ou can give me.

If your system has a soundcard (don't know if it'll work with integrated
sound on MB), you should be able to do it. You may also have to use third
party software for recording and converting the files. I have used Cool Edit
Pro for this. You can download a trial version from
http:\\www.syntrilliam.com which you will be able to use for either 30 days
or 30 uses (don't remember which), but the full version is a little
expensive. There are probably other cheaper alternatives. WinAmp may work.

I bought a cheap turntable (about $100) with a built in preamp to do this
with my old LP records. I plugged it directly into my soundcard's Line In
input, started up my sound recording program, started the LP, clicked on the
record button, and recorded each track. It's a time consuming process, but
worth it if the music is no longer available. A good sound program will also
remove a lot of the hiss, clicks, pops, and scratches from your old
recordings, but it takes a lot of patience and time, and you have to be
careful not to overdo the filtering, or the fidelity of the original sound
will be degraded. Good luck.
