always get message at startup that windows has failed to load

I am getting the problem that whenever I turn on my PC (or re-start it) I get
the screen saying that windows has failed to load - I select the load windows
as normal option and it works fine. I have virus scanned and checked
everything I can think off, trying sys restore to earlier times before
certain progs etc... and nothing has worked work.

My PC seems to be fine with all progs working fine - however it's worrying
that its telling me it can't load properly every time and obviously there is
something wrong. Any help would be gratefully received.

Make sure there's no spyware on your system as they are known to cause issues
like this

I have used zone alarm, spybot and adaware to check for spyware and they
removed some small things but nothing major - it didn't make any difference
to seeing the screen at startup.

Have you tried booting into the XP recovery console and doing a FIXBOOT
and FIXMBR?
