My Win2K has suddenly gone into the "One of your disks needs to be
checked for consistency" with each reboot. There is always no problem.

Shutdowns are normal.

Started after a glitch in one shortcut on the taskbar.

Any way to turn this off?

Dave,
I recently had this same problem, and was advised to make the
following registry change:

STOP CHECKDISK FROM RUNNING AT STARTUP

Here is what you need to do, step by step:

1) Go to "Start" and "Run" and type in regedt32 and click OK.
2) At the top of the Registry Editor that comes up - go to the top
menu & choose "View" and make sure that "tree & data" is selected.
3) At the top menu - go to "Options" and make sure that "Save Settings
on exit" is selected too.
4) Now double clicking each item step-by-step - go here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

5) In the right pane of SessionManager -- look for "Boot Execute" and
double click on it.
6) A multi-string editor comes up -- delete the part where it says
autocheck autochk*
7) Close down regedt32 -- you're done.
8) If you ever need or want to change it back -- it's easy enough to
go to the same place and type (autocheck autochk*) back in. Since it
never finds any problem in your system it should be safe for you to
make this change -- however, it might be a good idea to run checkdisk
manually once in a while. (This registry change will not prevent
manual operation of checkdisk.) Also, don't forget to make a backup of
the registry before starting this change. I hope this helps -- it
solved the problem very nicely for me. Good luck!
