Alt key not working

Since installing XP the alt key will not respond when using with the numeric
keypad for signs such as 'half' and 'quarter'. Any ideas as I use this very
frequently and hate having to go to insert symbols all the time!

make sure your num-lock is on. Then try again, I believe alt-0188 is a
quarter, alt-0189 is half and alt-0190 is 3 quarters.

You can see the character map by clicking on Start -> All Programs ->
Accessories -> System Tools

Having same issue here.
WinXP SP2

Numpad is fine. I can use it as a standalone.
Alt key is fine. I can use it for copy/paste/etc.
Used together, such as ALT+0169, I only get a small circle. Small circles
for most of the Alt/numpad combos. Only characters that appear once in a
while are the deck of card suits: spade, club, heart, diamond.

My Regional/Language settings (US English) is default and haven't been
messed with. I'm not sure WHEN this started, but it's a new system build
using RAID0 over two drives. I've reinstalled the OS many times before on my
old systems (which were standard PATA drives) and never had this issue.

Any help appreciated.
