Just upgraded to XP, firewall is blocking connection requests from NT
Kernel System, Generic Host Process, etc. Should these be allowed to
go thru? Searched the web and newsgroups, all kinds of conflicting
advice...

Yes.

How is Windows Update going to determine if you need MS Critical Updates ?

Yes.

Well, I could determine that myself, I suppose. I visit the update
site pretty regularly, and track virus news. And how is one supposed
to know that's what these things are trying to do? Not sure MS could
be any more cryptic about this if they tried...

Hi David,
I'm running XP Home with ZoneAlarm. I've found Win. Explorer will try to
connect (outgoing) once a month with a vengeance. You can't turn it off. I
always block it from doing so. No noticible effect. I do manual updates at
winupdates, and get only those I really need. Spooler Subsystem will also
try to run...a lot! It stays in the program list in ZA, but I "red X" it,
and don't see any problems, other than many outgoing attempts in the log.
Generic Host needs to run or IE and OE won't work. I give GH trusted rights,
but only IE and OE have "pass lock" status. And NONE have server status. I
can't seem to find info on these programs either, but from experimenting
found what works and what doesn't. HTH

They are such nerds, MS thinks it is "plain English."
If you would like to disable Automatic Updates:

Start
Control Panel
System
Automatic Updates tab
Uncheck: "Keep my computer up to date."
Apply
OK

It's already unchecked, still get the requests every day...
