allocating program folders from boot drive to another hard drive

My computer store re enstalled XP on a hard drive. Unfortunately all the
programs and program file folder are on another installed hard drive. how
can I have XP recognize other programs and settings and then save new
programs to that hard drive?

If they didn't clone the hard drive and re-install CP over the top of the
clone ... you will have to re-install all Programs.

They basically started you out with a brand new system ... with a brand new
registry ... where all information dealing with your programs are stored.

Find out from them how they did it.

If they re-installed over a clone, then allprograms are still pointing to
C:\Program Files in the registry.
You can copy the contents from the backup hard drive Program Files to
C:\Program Files and everything should work.

You will also need to re-install the shortcuts under C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Start Menu from the backup in order to access the
programs from the STart Menu.

You can *not* do this. Windows contains many references to settings,
pointers to where the installed programs are, and other needed files for
your applications, in the registry and elsewhere. When Windows was
reinstalled, all of that was lost. Your programs all need to be reinstalled.

This, by the way, is the reason that the separation of programs from Windows
on a separate partition, which some people advise, is largely useless.

XP is on D: drive, IF I can't link programs that are currently located on
C:
drive How do I force programs to be saved on C: Drive instead of D: drive
that the operating system is on? I have 200G C: drive and D is 8G. I'm
already running out of memory on D.

You shouldn't have to. Reinstall the programs to the location they are
already in. It should only take a few minutes since the files are already
there and the Registry will get updated.
