All Windows Updates Fail Install After Apparent Successful Downloa

Susan

With SP 2 and all updates installed and current in XP Professional I was
advised to attempt a Repair of the OS in order to fix an unrelated
problem--loss of power management schemes and functionality. The OS Repair
failed to fix the problem and created a new worse problem to resolve now.

Windows Updated and some 90 updates ready for me to install--including
security to program introductions such as IE7--all created from "Repairing"
the OS. I can install these updates from just 1 at a time to any number and
they initialize, and download but they all fail to install. Instead it
appears to abort after all the downloads are made with a message that the
updates failed to install. History doesn't show them as a success or failure.

I suspect there is something I need to delete somewhere in order for these
updates to be accepted and/or something needs to be deleted in the Registry
or elsewhere so Windows or Microsoft Update to correctly read what really
needs to be updated--are there really around 90 files that need to updated
again after repairing when they were once all installed?

Please help resolve this. I'm really not in any mood to do a clean install
at this point if files could be deleted or a Registry (RegEdit) entry edited
or deleted.

Thank you.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
