Hell ye! I am a 20 year old University student with poor spelling, but
that doesn't effect how well I study or perform as a student.

If you want to get anywhere in life ( At least in this country ), you are
going to need a good command of written English, I suggest you add this to
your list of courses.

That's true, not only in the UK :-).

Am already working on it. :)

I wouldn't worry about the spelling too much. It's the organization of what
you writer. I work for a very large international company and hold a very
high position and I can't spell very well...that's what they make spell
checkers for and to some extent, grammer checkers!

What you need to concentrat on is organizational skills at what you write
(be well organized and concise keeping the points you want to make in the
forefront) then run the spell checker and grammer checkers!

Good Luck in university!

Hay thanks.
I haven't met many people who take my english as a weakness, but
throes who do, aren't usually worth being concerned with anyway.

Poor English is a weakness, and 'Dennis', should really get an education.

Saying that spelling is not important is rubbish in my opinion; and I wonder
which large international organisation he works for, 'MacDonald's' possibly
?

Perhaps when he says he works in a high position, what he means is, that he
is a steeplejack in a construction site. Mind you, neither of you probably
knows what one is anyway, so the humour is probably lost on both of you.

Now you are just being ignorant.

There are many international folks in our company that are progressing quite
nicely and some don't even speak very plain english. There is a whole world
out there that isn't English nor American and no, I'm not a high act worker,
just an Engineering Graduate with honors who has progressed into upper
managment even though I don't spell well sometimes. What are your
credentials to be giving advice to prospective college students?

Furthermore I find your MacDonald's remak insulting to the many people who
work at MacDoanlds which happens to be one of the great American corporations
and we need more of them.

Exactly what am I ignoring ?

Dear me, from someone like you in a 'high' position within a multi national
organisation, I really would have expected a demonstration of panache. I'm
sorry you find my reference to MacDonald's insulting, but I suppose I should
expect nothing less from someone who apparently condones an organisation
which fuels the worlds obese.

I have a 1st In Computer Science, I run a successful business and I write
for a local paper in the UK. You see, we favour a more rounded education
system where our young people learn to not only speak, but to 'write' their
first language. <Gasp>

Dennis, just keep eating those hamburgers, I'm sure Ronald will thank you
for it.

I agree with you when it was about a Usenet message.

I do not agree with you when it is about a webpage that shows the whole
world something about your skills, before you publish that is the least you
can do is make the spelling correct as possible in the used language.

I think this is not a good advice from you to a student telling not to take
attention to that.

Just my 2 cents

Terry,

That is much better written than that "Poor English is a weakness"

Has nothing to do with spelling however with the contents.

:-)

No, I said ignorant, as in being ill-informed.
Judging someone purely on spelling is very narrow-minded. It's just
one skill amongst many. Einstein was a poor speller, but that didn't
stop him from achieving.

It's just my personal Blog, so I am not willing to spend time doing
multiple drafts. It probably makes me look bad, but that's why I
titled the Blog "Self Deprecating Journalism."

Koorb,

In my opinion is contents more important than spelling, however spelling can
make contents much better, so when you are able to do that, why not.

So do not look to the tone of the message however to the contents of the
message, which is meant to improve your quality in my opinion.

That's the point. Be as good as you are able to be.
