All desktop icons and start button and taskbar disappeared

Hi,

I rebooted my computer this morning and to my surprise
there was no more icons, start button or taskbar on the
desktop. I tried booting in failsafe mode, but the same
problem appeared. I have read in other forums that the
process sysu.exe could be the cause, but it is not
running on my computer. I also looked at every process
running and none of them appeared to be suspicious,
whether they are all system processes or software that I
know I have installed. I don't love the idea of
formating or reinstalling windows fearing to lose some of
my settings and documents.

Is there someone who could give me a hand with that
problem?

Thanks in advance,
Andre

Try the system file checker tool. Click start, run, and
type in this here; "sfc /scannow" with that space after
the sfc. It will ask for your XP CD to copy any needed
files from, and it runs as Windows file Protection. If you
don't have a XP CD, try to borrow one from someone. I
believe you can also run this in a command prompt window.
