If under sp2, I run a third party firewall like free zonealarm, and I don't
use ICS, but I do use a router, can I safely disable the alg.exe service in
the service panel?.....Thanks

Hi snowball,

Pre-SP2, Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) and ICS were dependent on the
Application Layer Gateway service. Since you not only have SP2 installed
(where ICF and ICS no longer depend on ALG), but you don't utilize the ICF
and ICS services, I would say that you could safely disable the alg.exe
service.

Regards,

Thank you Patti. I was not sure if zonealarm may have required the service.
Thanks.

You're welcome, snowball :-)

If you're interested in seeing the required services and system components
for ZoneAlarm, bring up the Properties window for the TrueVector Internet
Monitor service and check under the Dependencies tab.

Regards,

Thank you Patti. Please check my earlier post a few lines up. I cancelled
alg.exe with no repercussions, however, I also noticed i have the old
icf-ics configuration. It never updated with sp2. Can it be updated
separately?

You're welcome, snowball :-)

AFAIK, the item can't be updated separately. You could give
uninstall/reinstall of SP2 a try, as was recommended in your earlier thread.

Regards,

Thanks for the advise again Patti. However, I am loathe to go through that
process again just to fix a couple of glitches. Apart from these few
problems I have a complete sp2 install with no problems for over a month
now. If I reinstalled to restore these few features, I would just end up
disabling them anyway as they are disabled now. ( my services configuration
is minimal ala Black Viper) So I think I'll pass on a Reinstall, but can you
tell me what changes were actually made to these few services i have
identified for info I may need down the road. Also, do you think because I
had these services disabled, that this could be the source of an incomplete
change of the service panel? Thanks
