alg.exe? What's it for?

Matt

Just thought I'd post here so I don't unwittingly unleash
a plague on my laptop. My firewall program over the last
few times running Windows XP has asked me if I want to
allow the file "alg.exe" to access the internet. I have
thus far denied it permission because I don't know what
the file's purpose is. Could someone explain it (what
alg.exe does and if it's safe to allow it to access the
net) to me so I'll know what to do with it on a permanent
level?
Thanks,
-Matt

May be best to take the advise in this one

You MAY not need it, but for more info on Internet Connection Sharing and
Internet Connection Firewall have a gander in Help and Support, theres
everything you will need to know in there;
Start > Help and Support
Then in Help and Support
Networking and the Web > Internet Connections
or do a search in help and support for Internet Connection Sharing and
Internet Connection Firewall
or www.google.com it

FILENAME: Alg.exe.
PROGRAM NAME: Application Layer Gateway.
DESCRIPTION: Part of Windows XP that provides support for
ICS and Internet Connection Firewall (ICF).
RECOMMENDED ACTION: If a third-party firewall warns you
that ALG.exe wants access, check to make sure you're not
double-firewalled. If you are, disable ICF. If you are
using neither ICF nor ICS and are warned that ALG.exe is
trying to access the Net, deny it. A Trojan horse or worm
may be trying to use it as a backdoor.

I came here as a precautionary measure, not to get flamed
by an annonymous know-it-all who thinks they're so high
and mighty. I don't trust search engines, is that a
crime or something? I got the info I needed, and am now
leaving.
Grow up...

Don't let some rude replies get to you. You have as much right to be
here as anyone else. Most of the folks here are not that bad, heck even
the bad ones aren't half as bad as in other newsgroups!
