Got a new computer with Windows XP. When we play certain games, an alarm
will go off after a few minutes of play - no display of any screen message,
just an annoying, loud, ambulance sounding alarm that doesn't turn off til
you turn off the game. This is not a laptop - we are plugged into the wall.
What is this? Anyone know? Thanks for your time.

Hi Julie, is the alarm coming from your speaker (or headphones) or is it from your PC case/base station? It could be the motherboard warning of high temperatures on either your CPU (processor) or some other component. This may explain why it only happens when playing games as they tend to take up more continuous processing power (especially 3D intensive games) than simple Windows work. Try monitoring your temperature by either using the software that came with your motherboard or by using the BIOS. If you don't know how to do this then I would suggest returning your PC to the retailer.

Hope some of this helps.

The alarm you're hearing during the game may be due to a motherboard
heat sensor warning setting. Some games will really put a machine to
work; CPU, memory, video card, etc. That can quickly cause heat build
up in the case. If any of the fans are not working, it may cause
overheating.

Anyway, since the computer is new I suggest you take it back under the
warranty and let the vendor worry about fixing it.

Hi Julie:
Before running it back to the place of purchase, I would check a few
things first. I would check to see that the fans are working. Make sure
there is nothing blocking the airflow around your case. Also, make sure the
case isn't around any heat source, like a baseboard heating unit or a
radiator. If all of that is ok, then I would take it back and let the vendor
deal with it. good luck
