Hiya guys

I dont know if u all can recall that I wanted to split my signal because i wanted to put a tv aieral in my bedroom to feed my pci tv card

well i splitted the signal today i went to this local tv shop
chap was v friendly
helped me out lots

he gave me this splitter its the same one for digital sky
and the right connectors they are screw ins
and some really good wire

the situation is that there is a five way splitter that feeds 5 different sockets on my ground floor. this cable runs through my house into my bedroom underneath it into the loft.

so what i did is cut the cable up that runs into the ceiling into the loft.
one end of this into the splitter that would run straight into the loft
i then put the other end into the splitter which has a red line with "live" across it.
the man at the shop told me it should go in there.

this was a big moment
ran downstairs checked the signal
still v good
digital tv is working fine on both my pc
and my televsiion
thought brilliant!!

so then i connected up the new wire to the splitter, when connecting it to the splitter its actually screw on type.
but the end that goes into the pc is one of those old school connector types.
its not a screw one.

when i connected this cable into the pc
i tried the tv software some, the analogue channels r v good.
now with the digital ones some work good
but some of them STUTTER
they stop and start for instance tmf works fine
itv and itv2 stuter a lot just like bbc channels.

I checked the signal quality the bar is 9 tenths FULL
this is making me feel sick.
the channels do not work properly.
u cant watch tv if it stutters

I am a novice to aireals aint a clue really
but im fairly sure if that spiltter works fine to feed the tv and pc downstairs
it defintly would work fine up in my bedroom.

is there such a thing as the signal being TOO GOOD?
the actual distance from the pc to the aireal is 66% less than the tv!!!

the other thing is im gona get an screw on rf connector
the same sort of thing i got on the spliitter
im hoping itll sort this out..

any other ideas?
im hoping we got some ppl here that know abt this stuff

regards

It sounds like you have a good aerial signal, but the signal strength and signal quality are two different things - I have a ring aerial that I use with my freeview box, and although I get 9/10 signal strength the whole time, if the aerial is standing up I get very low signal quality but if I lay it on its side the quality is high.

Maybe the connection between PC and aerial cable is causing the problem?

The only type of aerial connector I know is the normal coaxial cable connector.

I thought the screw type connector was for satellite (BNC)?

Yes there is, but you shouldn't get problems with that unless you live practically on top of the TV transmitter. In any case, it would affect the analogue channels too (ghosting)

Did you force the screw connector into the PC? Or did you find another way to connect it?

You mention the splitter is for sky... that uses satellite connectors (BNC type)

Are you sure the guy sold you the right splitter?

hi thanks for ur reply

1.
do u mean conection between pc and the spliiter? i beleive it to be this but find it hard to understand why it would work downstairs but not upstairs where its v v close to aireal.

2. yep that is the one im using mate the normal one
but the way i cut the cable and put that connector on could be causing the problem? could this be true
there is that screening stuff im not so sure how to conect it like a professional.

3. the pc has a normal coaxial connecter i beleive rf input to wich i connected the airal into i dint force it
what i did was take the pc downstairs and connect it up to the 5 way booster it was working FINE no problems.

4. it has to be the right splitter
because the cables fit
even the signal downstairs is v v v good
signal level = 100 percent
signal quality = 96 percent
that is according to the software on my pc

i was thinking i could turn off the booster to see if it effects signal downstairs
maybe it could be wise to get a booster into upstairs or an amplifier of some sort?

am i correct is assuming that when i split the signal if it didnt work upstairs then the chances r it woulndt work downstairs?
it is really frustrating cuz ive spent so mcuh time and money on this!!!

Aye stutter is caused by a bad connection on a digital signal.

Maybe even one thread of the outer sheath of the coax is touching the inner core (the solid one)

If the split is before the feed going to your TV downstairs yes it may cause a problem, if after then probably not. Depends on lengths of runs and type of cable used

For short runs standard 75ohm Coax is fine for longer ones I would suggest using the better foil wrapped/insulated RG6 or the PF100 i think it is

hi trips this cable is meant to be the best is used by sky digital the bloke told me
the lentgh from the spliiter to the pc is very shot prehaps 5 metres at the v max
the cable i got is 7m in length it says this "antiference 5540 foamdouble screend for digital 294m"

it is foil wrapped
but im not so sure what to do with the foil
o just got rid of it.
is there any other type of screw connecto i could use so its more secure on the pc end?

ive attached a picture to show the signal strength

Yeah those lengths are fine...

Did u check the end of the connection like I suggested mate?

yes i did

i beleive it was okay
that screening is not touching the copper part of the cable
and i dont think its touching the plastic part either
