AGP Speed

M

Martin

I have recently installed a 9800 pro with 128Mb RAM.

It doesn't seem to matter whether I use Omega or Catalyst drivers -
SmartGart still shows AGP speed at 0X. My mobo is an Asus P4PE which
supports 4X AGP (and the BIOS reflects this).

If I try to set the AGP speed to 4X in SmartGart, when the system reboots,
it rverts to 0X.

Does this issue look familiar to anyone?

When I ran Aquamark, I only got about 18,000.

I am running a P4 2.8 with 1024Mb PC3200 RAM. The system is stable running
Aquamark & 3Dmark as well as Prime 95.

TIA

Update your chipset drivers, specifically the GART ones. Maybe thats the
cause. Also ensure that it's working correctly if you can.

Probably requires version 3.0 (mine does), so chipset drivers it is.
Make sure the AGP is set to 4x in the BIOS also

I don't see any updated chipset drivers on the Asus site, and no reference
to GART drivers. Do you have a P4PE too? Where did you get these drivers?

AGP is definitely set to 4x in the BIOS.

Got it fixed.

I had reinstalled Windows XP a few weeks ago, after an HDD format. I didn't
install the Intel Chipset Update Utility or the Intel Application
Accellerator at all at the time.

Just installing the ones on the Asus Motherboard CD has taken my Aquamark
from 18,000 to 39,300. Quite a difference...

Thanks

Glad my suggestion worked.

Excellent.

The first thing I do when I install an OS is to do the chipset, graphics and
sound drivers (probably in that order) - I make sure I have all the updated
drivers to hand before I install the OS.

Actually I meant the 9800 pro requires AGP 3.0, so whoever makes the mobo
chipset (Intel, VIA, AMD,SiS etc) will have drivers, usually for all of the
devices governed by the chipset in one package.
Best to go straight to thier website rather than the mobo manufacturers.
Glad to see you got it fixed though.

Thanks for the advice Y-grl.

Can you explain where, on an XP Home system, one can check the version of
AGP drivers?

Device manager -> System devices -> PCI to AGP bridge (this can vary a lot
in name)

yup looks familiar to me,

I had this problem when reinstalling catalyst drivers.

DO you use via hyperion drivers aswell because i had to reinstall
those to make it work ok again, so try that if use them!!!!

"Processor to AGP Controller" is the closest thing I can see, and it has a
version number of 5.x....

I've never heard of Hyperion. I use Hydravision - is that what you mean?

He's talking about Via Hyperion, the driver set for (most) Via chipsets.
