AGP 8X & PCI-E X16 ?

Charles Sapp

I recently invested in an ATI Radeon X850 Pro. I am now going to build a new
AMD 64 system. I found this Biostar (n4) mobo on the internet,
http://store.yahoo.com/directron/nf4ula9.html

Does anyone have an opinion as to the quality of this mobo? Does anyone know
if the X850 will work on it? Any other reccomendations for AGP/PCI-E mobo?
Thanks in advance.

Basically, if it is PCI-X, it should work, because PCI-X is a standard
that vendors have to comply (otherwise, they will go out of business :)

I'd recommend NVidia-based chipset for mobo. This is based on many inputs
and recommendations I've read from mags. or online.

Just google it if you want to be sure.

PCI-X and PCI-Express are different things.

I'm not familiar with the board. Maybe Biostar has found a means of
translating between the PCI-E bus and an AGP slot that gives tolerable
performance, but I wouldn't count on it.

The only chipset that I have read about that gives full performance with a
PCI-E graphics card or an AGP one is the ULI M1695. The only product I have
seen that is available in the US with that chipset is a budget board from
Asrock:

Google will find you some favorable reviews on the chipset. It's supposed to
offer performance similar to that of an nForce 4.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.
