XP SP2 installed on IBM ThinkPad and now it runs very slow - unusable. IBM
has some utilities it states should be run for SP2 but they require access
to control panel and now control panel will not load. How to correct this
SP2 issue?

Roll back to SP1, then run Windows Update, but select Custom -> All the
Critical Security Updates, sidestepping SP2. This way, you retain SP1, but
gain the added security of many SP2 patches. Afterwards, you can see them in
the Add/Remove Programs list. Works for me!

Hi Mark,

Thank you for posting here.

Based on my experiences, the problem can be caused that some third-party
software are not compatible with Windows XP SP2.

You can try to run msconfig.exe to disable Startup Group and Third party
services on the Windows XP computer. What is the result?

You can refer to the following document for more information:

Have a nice day!

Thanks. That's what I finally tried... uninstall SP2, update critical
updates sidestepping SP2... system still boots very slow and HD keeps
spinning l-o-n-g time after desktop appears and very slow to access files...
Spybot/Adaware/NAV2005 reported nothing... uninstalled NAV2005 (it was
upgraded from 2003 after SP2 had installed so plan was to uninstall and
reinstall... solved nothing... ;-(

Thanks. Yes, IBM Tech Support walked me through MSConfig and disabling all
except MS services and rebooting... although it helped slightly still
extremely slow so they said it was MS issue and bailed out.
Tried system restore to point before SP2 but that fails after 2 hours (about
80% of status bar) stating 'could not restore, try different restore
point'... this happened on 3 different restore points... at over 2 hours a
pop to discover this failure it's quite frustrating... It's an IBM ThinkPad
with no Windows CD or restore CD... (files all on the computer) or I
probably would have run 'restore CD' and taken her back to factory
settings... I'm doing this for a total novice friend who got sucked into
the SP2 install... she uses this PC for her real estate business and has
been been out of business for several days (usually accesses MLS from home
office)...

Hi Mark,

If the data is very important, you can try to connect the hard disk to
other computer and copy the important data out. After you reinstal Windows
XP, I recommend that you install Windows XP SP2 directly before installing
other software.

Here are some documents for backup and restore files in Windows XP.
