After verifying DMI Pool Data bootup freezes

I can't boot up my computer and am having several
symptoms that I can't put together to understand the
exact problem. Maybe someone can tie the various symptoms
to one problem or help me troubleshoot?

I have a:

ABIT KT7 MB
XP Pro SP1
AMD Duron 750MhZ
2 CDRom Drives that aren't causing the problem because
I've unplugged those and still have the problem
1 Western Digital WDC WD2500JB
Floppy Drive - I forget
Video Card - I forget
1 stick of RAM and I've tried other sticks and problem
still happens
Everything else is unplugged...

When I try to boot up it gets to Verifying DMI Pool and
it hangs.

When I try to unplug my hard drive and boot to the XP Pro
SP1 CD it makes it all the way

When I try to boot to the XP Pro SP1 cd with the hard
drive plugged in I get the message checking hardware
configuration and then it freezes

When I try to boot from XP Pro SP1 bootable discs I get
to the 5th disc and it is loading the fat file system and
I get the error File ntfs.sys caused unexpected error
(4096) at line 5025 in d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\setup.c.

So, I can't think of a way to get to the hard drive to
replace this ntfs.sys file or repair XP or reaplce my mbr
file. All things I think may be the problem but I'm not
sure because I don't have that much experience. Can
anyone direct me to the problem or a way to get at the
files to replace this ntfs.sys or the mbr???

Thanks in advance,
Rick

I would suspect your hard drive is the problem. You need
to download your hard drive model and manufacturer
dianostic utility for your hard drive and run all tests
on your hard drive. If you fail any test, I would back up
what I could. And look for replacing hard drive.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I've been able to run the Data
Lifeguard Diagnostics CD and discs and I've had success
running the tests....nothing abnormal.

Thanks for the suggestion.

If lifeguard diagnotics is your manufacturer hard drive
diagnostic utility I guess the hard drive is ok. One
thing curious, you mentioned that intallation is windows
xp sp1. I didn't know they made installation windows pro
xp cds with sp1. Could the sp1 part be giving you
problems? Are there any options regarding the install?>
In otherwords can you just install windows xp vanilla ?---

Yes, Microsoft released XP Home and Pro with SP1.
To me the problem does sound like a hard drive issue. Try to download
and run the programs from these links.

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DataAdv

The DFT has a sector repair tool, just becareful using that, if you
correct corrupt sectors, data in that sector will be lost. Also, a
grenn screen at the end means a pass, if it is red, you have a
problem.

On-Track data advisor is a scan only program and might be better than
the mfg utility.
