Hi.
I plugged my mobile phone into my laptop using an original USB cable. I
immediately received a "Power surge" error balloon in Windows. I
followed the instructions to reset the device, but now none of my 3 USB
ports work (they are connected directly to the motherboard) with any
device I plug into them.
How do I get my USB ports back?
Some troubleshooting info:
Computer: Abook 3000TXi (manufactured by AOpen I think). The Chipset is
an Intel 855PM. Intel's site doesn't offer any help either.
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2 + latest updates.
All devices - including the phone which started it all - still work on
other computers and worked before.
I've also been in contact with Microsoft Support which didn't resolve
the issue either.
I've tried deleting all USB devices, root hubs and controllers from the
Device manager with no success. On the next bootup Windows correctly
finds and installs all devices I uninstalled, but still there is no
connection made to any USB device I plug in. I have verified that there
is power on the port by plugging in an USB LED lamp.
I've tried repairing my Windows installation and reinstalling Windows.
Nothing seems to work.
I've tried disconnecting power from the laptop including power supply
and battery for about 10 hours or so; nothing.
It is of no use to plug in a self-powered hub because there is no
connection to the hub (obviously).
There is no way to change any USB related settings in the BIOS.
Since there is power in the ports, that would rule out all ports having
been short-circuted by the phone USB device (i would think), and it is
not a driver problem since Windows detects and installs the controller
and root hubs correctly. I have this feeling that if I could only reset
the USB ports (like in that dialog which popped up after the Power surge
error) the problem could be corrected. But how do I manually reset it?
Help?
If noone here can help, I suppose the next step will be to return it.
