after update, computer won't work

Running Win98SE - did a Windows Update and installed all the critical
updates. After reboot, the desktop needs to be "recovered" and the nothing
will work. Even if you don't "recover" the desktop, nothing works. Can't
open any programs or files and only get an error message stating that windows
has encountered a fatal exception in module 0D and then a bunch of zeros.

This is actually not for me, but for a friend. Since she can't open
anything, she can't get online to even search for any help, so I am posting
this in the hopes to be able to give her some answers to get this fixed.

Basically what I am asking is what we can do to at least be able to delete
the updates to go back to the way it was before the updates so that we can
figure out what caused the problem. We have started in Safe Mode and can't
even open up the Control Panel to delete anything. It won't open any
programs or files and won't let us do anything, except reboot. I do have to
say her virus protection is extremely outdated and she has no adware or
spyware removal programs either (at least not that I know of).

Any/all help is greatly appreciated

oops!!

Connie,

Tap F8 at startup and select Command Prompt.

At the C:\ prompt type:

SCANREG /RESTORE (note space between G and /)

Press enter and select the first date available just BEFORE installing those
updates.

Restart when the process completes.

That should take care of the problem.

Now visit Windows Update to install any patches but DON'T install hotfix
KB891711.

This one is causing too many problems and you may just be one more victim.

Good luck,

Zee

hope that takes care of it for her.

Again, thank you for your help. It is greatly appreciated!!
