After Running Windows Update, Vista No Longer Starts

Last night Vista had a security update to download. This morning after
turning my PC on, it told me it still had the update to download, so I tried
it again, and the same thing happened after I rebooted. So I followed the
instructions on the Microsoft tech support website which instructed me to
delete the Windows Update downloaded files and reboot. That worked, and I was
able to download and install the update... however after I restarted, Windows
no longer boots at all! It won't work in regular mode, or in safe mode. I
even tried using the CD to repair Windows -- it spent a few hours checking
the disk for errors and found no errors... I ran the Vista start up repair
tool from the CD and still it will not boot. When the boot sequence starts,
the graphical bar with the Vista logo and the progress meter never appears...
the screen just goes blank and the computer stops. I have to reboot after
that. What can I do??

Here's a little more information I can give:

When I try to boot in Safe Mode, it stats showing what files it's booting.
It stops when it gets to WDFLDF.SYS, which is only after a few other files...
very early in the sequence... does this make any sense?

It will be easier for people to help if you can mention a couple of
things...

Is this a new machine that came with Vista installed or did you install
Vista from disk yourself? If so was it an "Upgrade" or a brand new install?

What video card do you have (Maybe the machine is not going "Dead" but you
are not seeing anything on screen because it has switched to the wrong video
system). If you can get to the BIOS during boot up (Press Del to enter
setup) or whatever it says you may have some oprtions there to help you.
Unfortunately all BIOS have differences so exact help is difficult, but you
are looking for an option to choose primary VGA adapter and the choices will
be something like PCI / AGP etc.

If you can give other hardware details that will also help, someone here
might just have the exact problem and already have found a solution.

Do you mean WDFLDR.SYS. Situations like this require exactness. Proof read
your posts.

My Vista Home Prem. loads WDFLDR.SYS and then loads ACPI.SYS during normal
boot. (not safe mode)
So maybe your hanging at ACPI.SYS.

Last night, my computer did the same and I deleted update files (the folders
with a bunch of random numbers and letters like "84ejjdd9es8d". This happened
to me last night, March 16th, 2007. I first became aware of the problem today
March 17th, 2007. My problem is that of the same, where it hangs, therefor I
am sure there is no video card errors.

It hangs early in the file loads when trying safe mode. I am not currently
at the computer but it hangs at something like "vrtuadrv" or some type of
manager.

It kind of sucks because I have a Dell XPS M2010, 1 gig memory, 70 gig HD,
256 mb Video, bluetooth mouse and keyboard. The mouse and keyboard won't work
until an OS starts, so I'm having to switch my keyboards from other computers
just to try and diagnose it. I also am not in possesion of my Vista CD due to
the fact of my new puppy. Yeah, puppies chew many things, and apparantly he
likes CD's. Not really stressed about the CD, I have my product key and all,
but at the current time, that does me no good except say that my copy is
genuine >< .

Well, it seems I am rambling, so all I can say is I'll post any new
information I can uncover, but at the current time, I seem a bit stumped.

P.S.: My system went into vista by being upgraded from Media Center 2005 SP2
to Vista Ultimate. In case this may have an effect.
