Did you install the chipset drivers for your motherboard? That is
absolutely the first thing you should do after a clean install.

You said you "tried" to install the latest driver. *Did* you in fact
install it?

Is it Version 0639 (8/26/02)?

Did you try downloading it from
http://www.download.com/CMI8738-WDM-Driver/3000-2120-10495782.html

It looks like the compressed file is:

CMI8738_WDM_0639XP.zip

You will need to expand it first.

Go to Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices.

Go to the Audio tab.

What is the default device for sound playback? Are there other options
in the drop-down window? And what is the default device for MIDI music
playback? And are there other options in the drop-down window?

Also you may want to use Belarc Advisor to determine if there is more
than one sound card causing a conflict. You may download it from:

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

When you run the profile, what is listed under Multimedia?

hi...i have checked the sound and audio devices... the dedault device for the
sound playback is : C-Media Device. And there is no other optionsin the
drop-down window. the default device for MIDI music playback was blank..empty
nothing was selected... and there is a selection in the drop down
window..that is Microsoft GS Wavetable SW synth and ther other is MPU-401. I
have selected the microsft wavetable sw synth and click apply and ok... but
when i check the sound and audio device properties again..it back to default
...that is blank and noting was selected... and i also selecet the MPU-401
....still is the same...its always back to blank.......

Wipe drive, install XP SP2, install chipset drivers, install NIC drivers,
Windows update. The cmedia drivers should have been on the disk
with the chipset drivers. There will be (should be) a Cmedia driver on
windows update under hardware. Also check in the BIOS setup to make
sure the onboard audio is enabled.
