After one month with RC1

I'm pretty much your average blah end user; I upgraded from XP Pro. After
about a month with RC1, here are my thoughts:

-The folders allow no preview for images, a la Thumbnails or Filmstrip in
XP. You can open the images and flip through with Windows Photo Gallery, but
it lacks the convienience of an in-folder view.

-I have Photoshop 5 (yes, I know, welcome to this century), and the
performance is markedly decreased over XP. It starts to choke if I open
about six full-res pics from my camera, while I could get away with about
fourteen with XP.

-No Web Publishing Wizard. For 99% of my transfers, I use CoreFTP, which
works fine, but for my LJ scrapbook, the WPW was the most straightforward way
to upload.

-Windows Media Player reverts to the Corporate skin when I click the Skin
button from Full mode, not the skin I had it on before switching to Full (the
Atomic skin, FWIW). I have to go to Skin Chooser each time I want to go to
Skin from Full.

-Vista does not support my Yamaha sound card (XP did), so WMEncoder no
longer works for sound capture.

-Windows Media Player keeps giving me a message that my Sansa m230 is using
an outdated driver that is no longer supported - it's the driver Vista
auto-loaded.

I do like the changes to file management, and other little things - XP would
switch my default mail program from OE to Outlook every time I downloaded an
update, and Vista keeps it on The Renamed OE; driver support is better for
some of my USB peripherals; the ReadyBoost is nifty - but these issues do irk.

Try RC2. I installed RC1 and immediately uninstalled it but RC2 is pretty
damn good IMHO!

Jack,

It was released to the public for a short time. I have the install . Would
you like a copy?

Download RC2 from RAPIDSHARE. It comes in about 40 .rar files, and for
convenience sake pay 10 Euros.

Thank you Yoshi for your offer.
I have already made my mind.
Vista is not for me.
I need to use command prompt window with drag and drop operation.
Vista has disabled that feature.

Jack,

Fair enough... I felt the same you did. I was very reluctant to install RC2.
I am glad I did. We all need to realize that beta and rc versions are not
final. You can't expect to install it and run with it as if it were a RTM
release. There will be issues/bugs that need to be fixed. Some new features
put in and some old left out on purpose or hidden. I don't blame MS for only
allowing 200k downloads.

Anyway, good luck!

Jack,

If you don't use it and don't like it, why continue to post here? If you
don't use it, you can't assist others. If you don't like it... well, that's
OK, but to just lurk here so you can cast aspersions on Vista seems a little
off-base.

I wonder what type of responses you'd get if you went into one of the Linux
or Apple NG's and said "I don't use it, I don't like it." Better have your
flame resistant suit on then...

You guys that want to install RC2 should also note that it doesn't come with
the same level of support from MS as RC1 does. I think I also read that you
won't be able to perform an upgrade from RC2 to RTM but that could be wrong.
