After Archive, Get Space Back?

I have a PST file at 1.6GB in Outlook 2002 XP. I believe the best way to
reduce it would be to archive email messages from past years. Or are there
other alternatives?

Once I would select to archive a folder with old messages is there a
repacking feature I need to run to regain this space in my main OUTLOOK.PST
file since I am reaching the limit?

Reduce the size of a data file
A data file is a Personal Folders file (.pst). If you
delete items from a data file, the size of the file will
not change unless you compact the file. Compacting the
file might take several minutes.

On the File menu, click Data File Management.
Click the data file that you want to compact, and then
click Settings.
Click Compact Now.
Note When you compact a .pst file, you do not have to
exit Outlook.

I got that from the help that came with outlook...try
looking there before coming here
