AFP File name length limitation

When copying a file from MAC OS 10.2.8 or 10.3.5 to a 2003 file server
running Macintosh File Services we receive an error if the filename is longer
than 27 characters (not including the . extenstion).

If the file is transfered over SMB, or to another MAC, the 27 name length
limitation does not exist.

The error we receive is The file [filename] is too long or includes symbols
the disk can not display.

Has anyone heard of a file name length limitation on the Mac file services
for 2003?

Macintosh Files Services uses AFP (Apple File Protocol) 2.2 which has a 31
character file length limit. This limit exists on Classic Mac OS clients as
well. This same file length limit does not exist with the newer Mac OS X
clients which use the newer AFP 3.x. SMB clients or third party AFP
products using the newer AFP 3.x do not have this limitation.
