Aero gone?

Hi,

I have Windows Vista Business and a Radeon9800pro. Aero used to work
but seems to be broken now. The performance index is 1.0 for graphics
and the performance tool also indicates that the graphics card can
only do DirectX 8 while in fact it is perfectly capable of DirectX 9.
I deleted and reinstalled the graphics card but that did not help -
any suggestions to get it going again?

Thanks,

Frank

Sometimes in the past new drivers caused performance degradation. I would
uninstall and install a new driver (either newer or older). You may be able
to roll back a driver.

ATI has been constantly releasing new drivers, ever since Vista hit the
market. If you haven't already done so, try to download a more recent
version from your computer manufacturer's site. Drivers aren't available for
Radeon 9800 from ATI directly. More information on:

Hi,

thanks for the hints. Actually I am constantly updating my drivers and
I think the index of 1.0 indicates that something is broken in the
DirectX install probably. So any other ideas?

Thanks,

Frank

Run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, read this FAQ first:

By the way, have you tried to do a System Restore to a time when Aero worked
the way it should?

If you need to reinstall DirectX, you can download it from here:

I have Vista Ultimate and a Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB - and no probs:
I let Vista install its own driver and try to find a more recent one by
Windows Update only.
The Performance Index is 5.6 and 4.5, respectively.

In a number of cases, newer drivers are not better drivers. :)

Hi,

actually in this case this seems to be true...

I reinstalled Vista and Aero worked again - unless you install the ATI
Catalyst 7.9 drivers. This is bad because I need these drivers for
Doom 3 actually. I am pretty surprised but I tried to install only the
drivers and the complete suite. Both disabled Aero. Going back to a
System Restore before the install of the drivers solves the problem.

I am using a German Vista but that should not be a problem I think.

Best regards and thanks a lot for all your help!
