I keep getting a popup telling me to click for an update that is
available, but it doesn't tell me which software it is for. It
identifies itself with a logo icon, but I have half a dozen different
antispyware programs, and I don't remember which is which.

Which software identifies itself with a green jigsaw puzzle piece?

As you are using WebTV, I don't have a clue what you use for a
browser.........but, if it is Firefox, updates will show up down on the
lower right above your clock and do look rather like a puzzle piece. I am
ignoring the update at the moment.....but why not click on it and find out
what it is. Or hold your cursor over it and see if it identifies itself.

AdAware does not do that, btw.......nor do Spybot or SpywareBlaster or
HiJack This or CWS Shredder.

It's Firefox. Little puzzle-looking piece in a grey box, which
disappears rather quickly. You should also have a red circle with a
white "up-arrow" at the right side of the menu bar.
