Advice on photo files

Seeking advice on emailing photo files in Windows XP Home (using OE 6.0). I
use a Kodak digital camera and create jpeg files which are very large. When
I email the files as attachments, it takes forever to send (via my 56K
modem) and for the recipients to receive.

Is there a way in XP to compress these files or somehow speed up the process
both on sending and receiving photo files? Is there software that can
handle this task?

I realize that this question may be a bit "off-topic" for this group, but
suspect that one of the gurus would know the answer.

Thanks in advance for any advice and/or tips.

My experience has been that is is simpler to let XP manage the size of
emailed pictures by using the following method.

Find the picture you are going to email (usually My Documents/my pictures)

Select the pictures you wish to email by holding the Ctrl key down and
clicking on each one.

On the left hand side of this window is a frame which includes the option to
email this picture. Note, if this frame is missing, click on Tools/folder
options and put a dot in: Show Common tasks in Windows

Click on this and follow the wizzard. Before emailing the pictures, XP
offers to reduce the eamilaed copy (not the original) to a smaller size.

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for tip. I was simply "inserting" the file because I didn't know
about this Windows XP feature. Certainly speeds up process and doesn't
irritate the recipients because of the long download time. Appreciate your
reply.
