Advice on advice given in the other Outlook thread (to: K-MyL)

Since it sunk down to the third page, I didn't think anyone
would see my question, and so I post this here.

K-MyL, you advised me to do this:

STEP 6 => THIS IS THE ERROR
YOUR FILE HAS BEEN SAVED IN YOUR PROFILE DIRECTORY\local
settings\temporary
internet files\OLKXXX\`*.txt

SOLUTION
start RUN cmd
type exactly
attrib -s -h "%userprofile%\local settings\Temporary Internet
Files\desktop.ini"

then

ren "%userprofile%\local settings\Temporary Internet
Files\desktop.ini"
desktop.old

then

explorer "%userprofile%\local settings\Temporary Internet
Files"

locate the OLKXXX folder and go in it, you will find the
txt document you
saved in step 6

I did this. However, when I did the second command, I got
an error saying that Windows could not find 'ren,' and
couldn't perform the action.

I have no idea what this is about, but if all you're trying to do is find a
file that's been saved in the wrong place, use Start - Search - select My
Computer - If on XP, use advanced options to search in system folders and
hidden files and folders and subfolders.

Once it comes up on the search results, just move it wherever you want it to
go.

OK, the solution I provided previously should work. If the edited version
exists on your system - if in fact you DID save it - then it should be there
somewhere and a search will locate it.

Perhaps it's under a different name. If it was, say FILEX.txt, and you can't
find that updated, then try fil*.txt or filex.* and keep trying until you
discover what it was named and where it was placed.

I know for a fact that I saved it, although when I searched
for a file that contained a certain word in it that the
revised file had within it, nothing came up.

It might be encrypted in something. Someone else suggested
that it was in personal.pst of Outlook, wherever that is
(Search returned nothing for it)

You can't save a .txt file in a .pst file. Well, you can, but not using the
save command on Notepad. That's absurd.

Forget searching for words in the text. Take the time and search for *.txt
on My Computer. You'll get a lot of stuff but maybe you'll recognize your
file.

If that doesn't work, try searching My computer for *.tmp and see if you
find anything recognizable.

Any idea what the .tmp file would be named? And with what
would I open it?

Since you created it in Notepad, that's what I'd use to try to open it (and
it's what I generally use to open any .tmp file until I can figure out what
it really is - if ever). No, I have no idea what it would be named - but
it's likely to be something similar to the name of the original file. Then
again, it could be a random string of numbers. I guess the issue boils down
to how much effort you want to spend searching for this lost file, which may
or may not exist, rather than just editing the original again.

Best wishes

NB: "page four" doesn't mean much to people who use a news client - and even
through the web interface, the "page numbers" are going to change as more
gets posted.
You might want to consider using a newsreader like Outlook Express or Forte
Agent rather than the web interface to the newsgroups - it's a lot easier to
do nearly everything there, including searching, which is always a good idea
to do before you post, plus mark threads to be tracked, view replies to your
own message, etc. The Microsoft public news server is msnews.microsoft.com
and you can subscribe to as many groups as you like.
