Possible resolution for Red X attachments/Outlook

I went thru every techsite and blog looking for a solution and/or even
a cause for this problem. We did all the things recommended (Clearing
temp folders - but most only had a few items), etc. And dozens of
users were having this problem on a recurring basis. Like those at
other sites, this was becoming a point of frustration with the users
and of import to IT management.

The real problem was that something was interfering with the use or
creation of the OLKxxx folder in the registry (our organization is
using Outlook 2003 for the most part - a few Vistas). But we kept
randomly having to delete the line in the registry or create a folder
name at that line for the OutlookSecureTempFolder = C:\Documents and
Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKxxx\
where OLKxxx was the missing folder name and xxx is a random
alphanumeric string.

In our case (we are still testing, but it looks like this is the
problem) It was hard to pinpoint because most of our users do not view
jpgs/graphics attachments, and when they do it is often infrequent.

User was able to view graphics at his/her desktop.
Used Citrix to view attachment
Began getting RedX.

We have successfully tested this scenario. My thinking is that
because they are on a "virtual" desktop in Citrix, when Outlook writes
to the temporary OLK folder, something gets mixed up or lopped off and
when they return to their desktop Outlook cannot store into the OLK
folder (because for whatever reason it has been removed from the
registry line).

We don't have a solution yet, but think we will do a script to get the
OLKxxx into the registry at login or something like that.

We will be contacting Citrix and Microsoft and testing some more, but
if you are looking for a cause for this problem, maybe this is it...
hope it is of help to you.

note that the securetemp doesn't have to be in the olk* folder under temp
internet - you can move it anywhere, provided the folder exists, else
outlook will revert to the default olk* folder.

I believe we tried that. I will try it again, but do you know if
changing the location matters when Citrix is involved?

it should not matter about citrix, provided the path is accessible from
citrix. Ie, if you use c:\securetemp, that folder and path needs to exist
and be writable when you use citrix too.

There is no resollution to this issue, remove CITRIX and then try using RDP,
CITRIX ppl are blaming Microsoft and Microsoft CITRIX, and the end result you
are affected
