Advice and Suggestions re:spyware

Good Afternoon All , well except for those living "down under" and other
places!
Ok here is my "issue".
Running Windows XP HE.With all the new security issues and thanks to this
newsgroup I have managed to stay both virus and worm free...so FAR! While
scanning my entire drive with SpySweeper I came up with the following 4
spywares found:
Backweb
Live Person
Flash Track
NewdotNet
About 1 minute into the scan , while scanning memory I got the following
<error>, <warning> from the program:
"WARNING" A spy has been detected running in memory.
Name: NewdotNet
Category: Adware
NewDotNet is a IE plug-in that adds subdomain's to your name resolution
resulting in what appear to be extra top-level domains (.shop .inc,etc.)
being resolvable. Do you want to shut down this memory item now?
-end of error message-
I chose to click yes , to shut down newdotnet. After the program finished
scanning it gave me the option of quarantining three of the spyware, namely
Live Person, Flash Track and NewDotNet. I did so? But when it came to
Backweb, it said that this program was legitimate and if I quarantined it ,
some programs would not run, thus I chose not.?

The point, should I have quarantined the ones I did ? and should I go back
and quarantine Back Web also?

Thanks In Advance
Respectfully

Some free software, as part of the license, requires installation of this so
called "spyware". If you accept the license then you also accept the
conditions. If you don't like it, remove the program and associated spyware.

If the spyware has just found its way onto your pc without your "permission"
then just remove it.

Personally, I'd remove the lot - spyware is not good to have on your
computer even if it is fairly benign.

Goto download.com and download AdAware which will take care of the
spyware programs. Works for me! :)

Thanks for your help and suggestions. As I don't have McAfee on this
computer I did a search and came up with where I once must have used the
online virus scan by network associates (McAfee) for I found while doing the
search that it took me to this link
http://us.mcafee.com/root/landingpa...617&siteID=I6Fiacycsew-01EKbU4lLRT1T19kM03nIQ

--thus i suppose that is the program that <Backweb> is associated with. I
think I will just remove it and see what happens. Hey can't do any more than
crash me, and I think I have gained so much knowledge here , i can get back
up and running and put it back. I just do a restore point before i delete
the thing!
Thanks again
Regards
Gene

Backweb is program that is installed as part of software packages by
original equipment dealers, for instance HP, Gateway,
Compaq, etc. that is customized by the particular manufacturer to run in the
background and notify you of updates, bulletins, and alerts for your
particular system. It can be useful but is not necessary and be disabled or
removed with no problems.

That is a very nasty one - and tricky to get rid of. You need to stop
it loading, by Start - Run and running MSConfig and unchecking 'Startup
group' and exiting to reboot. I would also I think boot then with the
F8 key as BIOS info goes to black, and take Safe Mode. Then use a good
Antispy program (I use Adaware from www.lavasoftusa.com, but your
Spysweeper will probably do it).
