Advantages of OL2003 .pst files over OL2000

Michael Ray Browm

The current issue of PC World states that Outlook 2003 .pst files are an
improvement over Outlook 2000's .pst files. They advise anyone upgrading
from 2000 to 2003 to copy over the contents of each folder in an OL2000 .pst
file to a similar folder in OL2003. What are the advantages of Outlook
2003's .pst folders?

Theoretical limit of 30 terabytes, although I challenge anyone to have that
much disk space available for a PST file. Unicode compatible.

no pst size limitation as the others mentioned means in both file size
(older psts are limited to 2 GB max) and number of items - psts used in
older version have a max of 16,000 to 65,000 depending on the version. The
65,000 limit hits most people in the Deleted Folder - they don't like to
empty the trash because they use the Del key to file messages. (Very dumb
thing to do BTW, even if it is easy)

Does that limit pertain to the number of items per folder, or in the entire
..pst file?

per folder. 'items' includes subfolders (but not their contents) and custom
forms published to the folder (i.e., you can have 30 folders and 64970 items
in a folder in a pst created in outlook 2002) - in the new Unicode format
there is no limit to the number of items.

unless you need to maintain backwards compatibility with older versions of
Outlook, upgrade to Unicode pst.

Thanks for the information and advice. This probably should be a separate
post, but would you advise waiting for Office 12 to be released before I
upgrade?
