Advantage/disadvantage using image/background color?

Hello

I see many FrontPage developers using the technique of applying web page backgrounds by using solid colored gif images.

What is the advantage of using a solid colored background image (gif), rather than just applying a page background color to set the colored background?

This would obviously only applies to solid colors, not patterned backgrounds.

The image takes longer to load and may tile on different screen resolutions. If it's just a solid color image why use it at all? Most people just use them if they want a pattern or photo etc as their background.

Well, that was just what I wondered about. What I tried to determine was what the possible advantage would be using solid images to tile the backgrounds rather than using a solid color. As it seem to be a rather wide-spread practice, there must be some kind of thought behind it. Just a couple of examples that I found right now, are http://www.mediasciences.com and http://www.gustavsberg.com.

You must be looking at different pages than I am - I sure wouldn't say this
is wide-spread, in fact, it's rather bone-headed.

Where are you seeing that done on the gistavsberg site? The background
color there is coming from this CSS -

That is just stupid. If you need a textured or patterned background sure,
but to make a gif of a single color??

Some times you may not be able to match a page background color with a image on the site, etc. in
which case the best solution would be to use small solid background color image.

Personally, I prefer to have white page background

The only time that would happen would be if you were trying to match an HTML
color with a JPG, and you are right - that would be the way to do it. I
don't believe that is the case in any of these examples, though.
