Advanced page numbers

I am in the middle of formatting my Master's thesis to meet university
requirements. They have some complicated instructions for page numbers which
are beyond my knowledge in Word. The requirements are:

The first page of the document does not count for page number purposes. The
next three pages, i.e. the Title Page, Copyright and Approval page do "count"
for page number purposes, but the numbers do not appear on these pages. The
remaining front-matter pages (Dedication, Acknowledgements, Table of
Contents, List of Figures, etc.) receive Roman numberal page numbers in the
header, right justified. For the actual text of the thesis (starting with
the introduction) the page numbers restart and are numbered with arabic
numerals.

In the end this has to be submitted as a single .pdf file. Is there a way
to do all this page number work in Word, or should I plan on making different
Word files and figuring out how to merge them properly in Acrobat?

Thanks!
Kevin

You can use a Section Break. You can start page numbers over again in each
new section. I'd put a Section Break at the end of the Approval page and at
the end of the page just before your first body text page. Then use View >>
Header and Footer to access the headers and turn off "Same As Previous". In
the Section 2 header, use Insert >> Page Numbers, and click Format to get
Roman numerals and start with iv. For Section 3, insert and format as
required, start at 1.
