ADSL PCI Modem Problem

Andrew Portess

I have an MRI ADSL PCI modem which uses a Globespan Virata chipset. If I
have a sound card in my system then whilst streaming media or playing
on-line games the modem loses signal and disconnects. If I use on-board
sound there is no problem. Soundcards so far that have been tried without
success are SB Live 4.1, PCI 1287 and Terratec 5.1 Fun. I have moved the
cards to different slots and checked that no IRQs are being shared. I have
also increased the PCI latency in the BIOS from 32 to 64 but without
success.

MB is an Asus A7V600 with VIA KT600 chipset I am using Win XP home, vid is
Nvidia FX5900, have 512 MB Kingmax turbo PC2700 memory, Athlon XP2500 (OCed
to 3200 speeds).

Any idea how to stop the modem loosing signal when a soundcard is installed;
I am guessing it is something to do with PCI latency and something hogging
the PCI bus or trying to take whilst something else needs it but then
thought that with the new PCI spec that this no longer be a problem.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy.

I had a similar problem before.
PCI DSL cards are usually a combo of PCI modem + Ethernet card and they put
a big load on the PCI bus so although there might not be a conflict of IRQ
they can still get shaky when another demanding PCI card is present like a
sound card especially SB cards.
best solution? get a USB or Ethernet DSL Modem!
