adobe acrobat files format

When I try to attach a pdf file to an outgoing email, the adobe image ready
icon shows by the attachment rather than the pdf icon. When I receive pdf
attachments they also show the image ready icon. When I try to open them,
image ready opens and doesn't recognize the format. What do I do to have the
pdf files recognized as pdfs rather than image ready files?

Not an Outlook issue. Just set your prefered pdf-handler correctly in either
the application you want to open it with or in Windows;
Control Panel-> Folder Options-> tab File Types
