When my computer arrived, it was preinstalled. I set my
username to have administrator privileges but keep
getting errors when installing software that I may not
have the correct permissions. The software company said I
needed to log on as administrator, which other than the
permissions I set for my user account, doesn't appear. I
went through the knowledge base to no avail. Help!

Hi,

If you have welcome screen enabled (the screen where usernames and pictures
appear) then click ALT+CTRL+DEL few times (two will usually do it). Logon
window should pop-up and type in Administrator. I hope you know the
password. If you don't you can try with leaving password field blank and
click OK...

I hope this helps you out ...

hello... i have the same problem... my comp came
preinstalled. i am suffering from unrecoverable
corruption on my hard drive.

The way to fix the problem is either using the windows xp
to reinstall the sytem after wiping it clean or using the
windows xp repair utility.

I was cheated by gateway... they didn't send the product
key in the software bundle so i can't reinstall without
going and buying a whole new disk of windows xp... and i
can't use the repair utility because it requires the
administrator password... which i set up by pressing the
esc button at the welcome screen... but still, employing
and/or reseting the password didn't have any effect.

Todd,
Are you sure you don't have a sticker somewhere on your computer, side, back
inside a drive bay door, etc... that has the XP Product ID on it?

I think I remember Gateway either sticking them on the back of the case or
the upper right side of the case.
