Admnistrator Questions

I've got XP SP2 and under Control Panel|User Accounts it shows 2 users:

Bill
Computer Administrator
Password Protected

and

Guest
Guest Account is Off

I'm the only user on this PC (Bill) but when it restarts the Logon window
displays Administrator and another window opens says password is wrong. I
click okay on that password wrong window then enter password and it goes to
a completely different Desktop than I have set up under User Bill. Now I
can change the User name from Administrator to Bill & enter password for
Bill and it then goes to the Desktop I've set up since I installed XP.

My question is, is it possible to make Administrator and User Bill so I
don't have to go through the above and how can I get the Administrator
password changed so I don't get the Wrong password error Window. Though I'd
much rather it startup in Bill's Settings.

Still Windows XP Professional, right? Sounds like it is trying to autologon
as administrator and the password is incorrect. You can set/reset the local
administrator password by Start|Run|lusrmgr.msc then
Users|"administrator"|Action|Set Password

For an "NT"ish operating system you can run regedit.exe and navigate to;
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
edit the Reg_Sz string values
"DefaultUserName"
and
"DefaultPassword"
to reflect the correct username and password. (note: the password for an
autologon account can not be blank)
and set the value of "AutoAdminLogon" to "1"

If they don't exist add them.

David,
Yes it's XP Pro. I got the PW problem fixed for Administrator and it now
Auto-logon to Bill. All your instructions were easy and worked. Only had
to add the [DefaltPassword] in the registry.

As I asked in previous post, is there any way that Administrator & Bill can
be the same as it seems there are some programs that require you to be
logged on as Administrator to add them, otherwise it's really no biggy.
I've always loged on as Bill not knowing I was until I recently tried to add
software that required the Administrator be logged on which as I stated
earlier it shows me as Computer Administrator under User Accounts. Don't
see Administrator there.
Anyway, thanks for all your help.

You can logon as local administrator and add the "Bill" account to the local
administrator's group. To logon as administrator again hold the shift key
while logging off (to be presented with the logon box) then
Start|Run|lusrmgr.msc then Groups|Administrators|Action|Add To Group|Add and
type in "Bill" OK and Apply your way out.

You can have several user accounts, they do have to have
different names. You should not use the default
Administrator account for day to day operations so that
account will be less likely to be damaged by some improper
change.
But you can have, for instance...
Default Administrator (password protected and hidden]
Bill 1 administrator [password protected, not hidden]
Bill2 limited password optional, but recommended]

There is also a "run as" command that will allow working in
Bill2 but using Bill1 or default admin as the authority.

XP has a reserve account called Administrator, kept in reserve for
emergencies. This is normally hidden at Welcome once you have a regular
account with Admin status.

Start - Run - the line
control userpasswords2
Uncheck the box 'Users must give a user name. . .' If it is un checked,
check it, click Apply, then go back and uncheck

Hit Apply and enter the username (Bill) and password you wish to log on
with. And you will not even see Welcome, unless you hold down Shift
during boot

Jim, I think I get the ideal now on accounts, I was confused for a bit.

Glad to hear it. You're welcome.
