My office IT person was connecting my personal laptop to
the office network, and in doing so, set up a new user
account with administrator access level, and now my prior
user ID (and all the set-up I had done) no longer seems to
exist. When I try to set up a new user ID with the old
name, it says it already exists. How can I recover this
user ID?

You're going to need to use dos and type 'net user <your
username> *' and it will recreate the account. Then
you'll need to type 'net localgroup Administrator <your
user name>' and you should be set.
Hope this helps.

At a command prompt, do the following:
net users
Does this show the user that you created?

Also, What happens when you attempt to logon with the user in question?

I found that if I change to the log-in screen that looks
like Windows 2000, I can log in as the administrator.
However, I can't delete the new user ID (administrator
access level) that my IT person set up through the users
section of settings - control panel. It tells me there
that the original administrator user will only show up if
there are no other users (except "Guest") set up, but also
won't let me delete the new user saying that it is
the "only" administrator user, and there must be at least
one administrator user, which doesn't make sense because
there are really now two administrator users.

Thank you for your help.

Are you connecting to a Domain? If not, Try hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del twice
to bring up the old style logon dialog and typing the UserId and password
for the missing account.

XP, by default, Hides the default Admin account whne a User Admin
account is created.
