Administrator Password

I am presently trying to to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents
Windows XP from starting. My desktop computer will not start at all. Anyway,
I am following the instructions provided by Microsoft given here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;307545&spid=1173&sid=156

I've made my way into the Windows XP Home Edition Setup area and I have
pressed 'R' to repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console. But,
I am now stuck at the part that requires an administrator password. I was
under the impression that I was, in fact the administrator of the computer,
so I used the password that I am positive I would have used if I had set it
up. I was told that the password was invalid and to try again. So then I
thought maybe I never set up an administrators password. So, as instructed I
just pressed enter and I was told that the password was invalid. So, yeah. I
have no where else to go with it, because I clearly don't have the password.
Is there anyway to recover or reset the administrator's passowrd?

Hi Jennifer,
Here is a link that will walk you through the repair.Without using the
recovery console.
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

At first this will look like you are reformating but don't worry about that
you won't be. once your system is up and running if you change this registry
value you wont be asked for the password again if you ever need to use the
recovery console.

There is a bug in WinXP which prevents you from using Recovery Console
even though the right password is typed when prompted....
So, here's the trick.
2. Enable Administrator to Log On Automatically in Recovery Console
3. Reboot into WinXP.
4. Select Start | Run, then type regedit Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Setup
\RecoveryConsole.
Change the SecurityLevel DWORD value data to 1.
5. Reboot the PC

Good luck, and visit windows update when you are done(all of your updates
will need to be reinstalled).
