administrator password XP

P

pizoncc

I'm working with someone running Windows XP home. She
tried to change her password and some how managed to lose
or forget it. This is on her user name with full
administrator rights. The other user has limited rights
but remembers the password. I would like to know if there
is a way for me to remove, change or recover the lost
password.
Unfortunately the moron who originally set up the computer
entered a password for the Administrator and did not leave
it for the current users so we have no way of knowing what
that is.
Do I have to reformat the drive and re-install Windows or
can I get around this.
Please help, help, help.
Thank you.

pizoncc, WinXP Home generally uses a blank password for the true
Administrator account. So try that. If as you say some moron did create a
password for the administrator account, you might want to check out this KB
article, probably not much help however if you don't have a reset disk.

Use ntpasswd, which you can get here:

Read the how-to, but it's very easy.

I forgot to mention that you can only log on to the Administrator account
from safe mode in Windows XP Home. Just keep hitting F8 during start up
until the menu pops up.
