Administrator Password Lost

I have a dell laptop pc running windows 2000 that is standalone not on a
network. The problem is that the user does not have administrator rights and
needs to install some software that requires admin rights. The administrator
password has either been changed or forgotten and now we can't sign on as an
admin. Is there anyway around this admin password so that we can establish a
new admin password. Any and all help would be appreciated....Thanks.

Hi Madhur - Just noticed that your posting concerning the use of msconfig in
Win2k, here:
http://madhur.netfirms.com/cgi-bin/tips.cgi?title=Windows2000&file=win2000#3
is an exact copy of one of my standard posts. FYI, I don't normally mind
others posting my information since it helps to disseminate it to those who
need it, but common courtesy as well as professional ethics, normally
requires that you ask permission of the author and include attribution when
you use someone else's material. I would request that you do so in this
case and for any other MVPs' material you may have copied without permission
and attribution.

An exact copy of your standard posts????

It's a link for Pete's sake. Unless you are the author of that web-site, get
over yourself.

Hi Bill - Perhaps you should take another look before you jump quite so
quickly. First of all please note that it is his website that his link
pointed to, so posting a comment about what's on it is certainly
appropriate.

The link I posted is to a different area of Madur's web site than the link
he posted in his post to which I responded, an area which I just happened to
read (since it's right above it) while checking out the link that he did
post to see if the information he was pointing to was correct. (Wow, that a
confusing enough runon sentence for you? :) ) I don't know about the
source of the material at the link he posted, but the material at the link
to his site that _I_ posted is copied from my work without permission or
attribution.

So, do you really think I stand in need of "getting over" myself if I find
it discourteous and unprofessional for him to implicitly take credit for
someone else's research, and chose to call that to his attention,
particularly when I would have been glad to have given permission in the
first place, if asked? I certainly don't.

OK, I'm totally confused. I have a new dell laptop with an admin password
that must have gotten fat fingered when loaded...There are no other accounts
on this pc how can I change or reset the admin password? This is an imaged
pc so reinstalling win2000 is not an option. All these other posts directed
me to links that i don't understand. Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thanks Bob

Hi Telguy - READ ALL OF THE INFORMATION THERE CAREFULLY and then follow the
directions here: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ and specifically
here: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html

Basically what you'll be doing is to create either a floppy disk or a CD
using the appropriate image files which you can download at that link,
booting to that floppy or CD source instead of a normal Windows boot and
then following the step-by-step directions for the Password Recovery default
option.

What you're trying to do isn't trivial, and can have some undesirable side
effects under certain circumstances including loss of previously encrypted
data, if any, as well as other things if not done correctly. Read
everything including the FAQ, and be sure you do understand what's involved.
If you're unsure about what you're doing, then find someone locally who's
knowledgeable in this area to assist you.
