administrator password issue

Sometimes I use Linux and there is one function that I really like.
When installing software which requires admin rights, it will pop up a
password box asking for the admin password while in a user account. Is
there a way to get windows to do the same thing. I am using a limited
user account, but having to log off and log back on is a bit of a pain
to just install some software. It would be nice if all I had to do was
just enter a admin password or some type of password to be able to
install the software.

Use Vista.
If that doesn't 'pop up enough' for you, nothing will. ;-)

Right click the installation file and select "Run as" from the
menu. You should be able to enter the credentials of an
adminstrative account.

Good luck

Thanks, I had forgotten about that since I never use it.

Well, since I am not made of money I think I will stick to XP, but
thanks anyway.

I'd like to continue on this thread. The "Run as" trick is good for many
things but wil fail for complex installations (in which several appplications
are called one after another).
Is there a possibiity to write s script of a batch file that will confer
Administrative rights to a user (with appropriate credentials) so that he/she
can perform administrative tasks for a while without having to long off, log
as as admistrator, do what he/she needs to do,a nd then log back as user ?

Also, sometimes applications installed when logged as an Administrator will
not work perfectly when logging as user. I found out that a "best way" is
actually to log as ans administrator, then give adminstrative rights t the
user, then log off as administrator and relog as the suer (who now has
administrative rights), do the installation, and then remove administrative
rights from the user (and logging him.her off and let him.her relog again).

At the end of the day, this is very boring. hence my question.
