Administrator Password - how to set?

P

Poor Tom

Hi,

I googled 'administrator password', but all returns concerned people who had
lost theirs, so hopefully someone here can help.

When i start Windows XP normally, just one account appears on the logon
screen - my name, as I would like it. But booting into safe-mode gives the
chance to log on as administrator, and this isn't protected. Furthermore, a
thief would then be able to boot into safe mode, log on as the adminstrator
and access all the files under my user. Two questions:

1. How do I set up the administrator password?

2. How do I protect my files from other users? I did this once but can't
remember.

Many thanks!

Hi,

1) Boot to Safe mode, start/run "control userpasswords2". On the advanced
tab, click the advanced button. Click the users folder, right-click the
admin account and choose "set password".

2) You need to set permissions. In WinXP Home this is also done from Safe
mode for folders other than those stored under your profile (for those, just
right-click/properties/"make this folder private"). See:

HOW TO: Set, View, Change, or Remove File and Folder Permissions in Windows
XP
