Administrator login an XP Home without Safe Mode or with higher screen resolution

Al Moben

I have a problem installing an application as Administrator on Windows XP *HOME* Edition:

When I boot to normal mode and logon with a user account, the application setup quits with the message "You have to log on as
Administrator". This happens no matter if the user account has administrator privilages or not. It really requires *the*
Administrator login.

So, in order to log on as Administrator on XP HOME, I have read that I have to boot to Safe Mode. I did boot to Safe Mode, log on as
Administrator, but when I start my application setup, it fails with the message "Your system does not meet the minimum system
requirements: Screen resolution 800 x 600 or higher required". But my Safe Mode has only 640 x 480, so again, I cannot install the
application.

You see the problem: Log on in normal mode, and it fails because I am not Administrator. Log on as Administrator in safe mode, and
it doesn't have enough screen resolution because of safe mode. Fails to install in both cases for different reasons.

Is there any way to (1) log on as Administrator in Normal Mode in XP HOME, or (2) log on as Administrator in Safe Mode but have the
higher screen resolution of normal mode? Or any other option that would help? The software installed fine on Win ME and Win 2000,
but 2000 had a normal Administrator login. But now I have a XP HOME machine, and it doesn't work.

Re: Is there any way to logon as administrator in Normal Mode...

Try the following:

1. Log all users off
2. At the logon screen press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to bring up the classic
logon dialog
3. Enter Admininstrator credentials

This will not work in XP Home.

Correction, you can log on this way, but not to the built in Administrator
account. It is only accessible via Safe Mode.

XP Home has some weird restrictions.
Seems like it's crippled in area's that
inconvenience the user rather than just provide a reduced
feature set.

For example, PRO has the policy editor, it's an extra feature
for fine tuning the system. Home doesn't have it.
That seems a sensible delineation.

But restricting the HOME user from logging on as ADMIN
does not. Seems a petty choice to me.

Hm, ok, but my original problem remains: The application setup (which was obviously designed in the good old non-restricted days of
WinME and Win2K) requires me to meet both requirements: log an as *the* Administrator and have a screen resolution of at least
800x600 pixels. If, as you say, it's only possible to log an as Administrator in Safe Mode, that would reduce the question to this:
How can I switch to 800x600 in Safe Mode? My Safe Mode on that machine seems to have only 640x480 resolution.

It's not just causing inconvenience to the user, in my case it's completly breaking compatibility with older (~ year 2000) software,
which requires to be installed by *the* Administrator with a screen resolution of 800x600, which I don't have in Safe Mode...
(solutions anyone?)

But maybe that's what Microsoft wants: Have XP Home pre-installed on every system (brings cash into Bill Gates' pockets), then let
the user eXPerience that their OS is a crippled version, and in doing so force them to upgrade to XP Pro (and again cash into Bill
Gates' pockets). Sounds like a clever money making model to me...
But restricting the HOME user from logging on as ADMIN
does not. Seems a petty choice to me.

And after google-ing through various newsgroups yesterday, I
(1) found many posts of users who are annoyed by this
(2) found no posts of users who said "great way to restrict it"

Unfortunately, not that I'm aware of Al.
