hi...i just bought a computer with media center xp....i didn't know that
means it 's xp-pro.....at least i think it is because i set up admist. acct.
from control panel in regular mode, then later opened dxdiag and it said i
have xp-pro.
my question is.....if i add a password to this acct. now, which i didn't
at first, it says i will lose a lot of settings and stuff that i changed.
i've added inner and outer security programs and auto sign-ons for different
sites, stopped some stuff from starting at start-up, set-up q. launch with
different apps with a drop-up menu so i could get rid of the desktop
short-cuts...am i going to lose all those settings when i add a password to
this account now....thanks much....bob

If you change the password from another account, you will cause all the saved passwords to be lost. Log in to the account you want to change, and change the password from there.

hi doug.......i never had a password on the acct. that i want to put a
password on. i can do what you suggest....but will i lose all the things i
mentioned earlier on that account ? it says i will lose this or that, didn't
understand that thank you...bob

If you set the password while logged into that account, you won't lose anything. The problem comes in when you change the password while logged on to a different account. This is a security measure. Should someone gain access to the machine, and change another account's system password, the stored password's are lost.

thank you doug.....a load off my mind...lol...now if i can remember where i
saw how to make a password protection disc in case of future troubles...bob
