admin account and password (my sister is the one that messed it up so she had
the account under different username and password), but it doesnt work, it
say failled to log in.

Try going into Safe Mode and see if you're prompted at the welcome screen
for the administrator's password.

To go into the Safe mode:-
Restart the computer.
As soon as the BIOS loads, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do
so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.

or,

Click Start > Run > type msconfig and then click OK.
In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, check
/SAFEBOOT.Click OK.
When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart.

If you have disabled the built in administrator account, booting into
Safe Mode will automatically enable it again (temporarily, for that
Safe Mode session).

Boot into Safe Mode (tap F8 repeatedly early in the computer/Windows
startup process)

If no user logon appears in Safe Mode where you can type in the
user account name "Administrator" (or click on it), press
Ctrl+Alt+Del twice.

Tip:

XP Home? The admin account is hidden in that. Boot into Safe Mode
to see it. And this is exactly why every user should have their own
computer.

Phil Rabichow

Hi Kelly:
I have WinXP Pro SP2 on a single user machine with a user account "Phil"
that has administrator privileges. I use the friendly logon screen with no
password, so it boots directly to the "Phil" account. When I use Safe Mode
to get to the built-in administrator account, I can get to it. If I either:

1) logoff "Phil" account & then click "Administrator" at the welcome screen,
or
2) logoff "Phil" account, press Alt+Ctrl+Del twice, & then type
"Administrator" (no quotes) to get to the Administrator account, I get to a
screen with a picture on it with no taskbar or Start Menu. At this point,
I'm unable to use my mouse or my keyboard (although I can see the arrow move
if I move the mouse). I have to actually press the restart button on the
housing to reboot.

Is there a way to get back to the original Adminstrator account where I can
access files?

go to the Windows website (www.windows.com) and download the PowerToy called
TweakUI.

In the tweak there is an option for you to show or hide the Administrator
account on the Welcome Screen.

P

Phil Rabichow

Hi Lawrence:
Thanks for the response. However, I have TweakUI & the Administrator does show
up on the Welcome screen (when I use it). The problem is that when I click on
the Admin account & it loads, I am simply taken to a a picture (I assume a
screensaver), & the keyboard & mouse don't work...& there's no taskbar or Start
Menu.

P

Paul Knudsen

Hidden in both Home and Pro.

Well, I've never seen a Pro setup, but how do you explain a post just
a bit below this about a tweak to "hide the Administrator Account at
startup"?
