Administrative Share (C$)

when attempting to access the c$ share on another machine
in my workgroup i am unsuccessful. i am prompted with a
username password dialogue box and yet the username field
is greyed out and it reads "computername\guest" in that field.

all it will allow me to enter is the password. i have
tried using the admin password for the destination machine
to no avail.

sharing is enabled on the remote PC, and the c$ share is
listed under shares in computer management.

how come this doesn't work? thanks...

If this is XP Pro, and you disabled Simple File Sharing, check the
Local Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools). Under
Local Policies - Security Options, look at "Network access: Sharing
and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic - local users
authenticate as themselves".

Cheers,

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
