Administrative Rights

I have Windows XP Home. I now have three applications that tells me that I
need "Administrative rights " to use the application. My account is the only
account, stating computer administrator, with the exception of the guest
account. How did I lose the administrative rights? I have tried to install
one of the programs from safe mode logged in the administrator's account,
and I still get the message that I need administrator rights. What am I
doing wrong?
