Administrative password

Trying to do a repair on Windows XP Home Edition. It asks for the
Administrative Password to continue. The PC owner says none was
ever set. If you leave it blank and press enter it does not continue.
How do I work around this?
The computer boots up and goes to the desk top and has the wallpaper
but no icons, and nothing works. If you hit Alt Ctl Del it shows
processes running but no applications running.

This PC has their unfinish tax return on it and are desperate to
save all that...

3. Reboot into WinXP.
4. Select Start | Run, then type regedit Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Setup
\RecoveryConsole Change the SecurityLevel DWORD value data to 1.
5. Reboot the PC

This edit will stop XP from asking you for a password in the RC.

You may need to do this in "safe mode" if you can't get to regedit in normal.

I think you're choosing the repair in the recovery console, and that is not
what you want to do a repair install.

But he said he was trying to do a repair install, which doesn't require a
password. I bet he is selecting Windows XP installation using the Recovery
Console by pressing "R" the first time. He simply needs to accept the
license agreement (pressing F8), and then repisring the seclected
partition/installation of XP then.

There is no Start menu to choose in regular mode or in safe mode.
That is all blank.

Try bringing up task manager..click new task button and type in regedit.

I boot from CD. I get the option to repair an existing installation by
pressing R and starting the repair console. When I do that it asks for
the Administrative Password to bring up the console.

If you are attempting a Repair Installation, you do not want the Recovery
Console which is what you get if you press "R" at that point, do not press
"R" at that time:

I have the same problem. when i goto repair and then select the drive it asks
for password

1. since windows does not start - how can i edit the registry to make a fix
2. is there a default password i can use to start the repiar?

yes, 3 blank enters says failed attempt.

i have windows professional - here is part of the problem. when i recently
updated tp xp2 my maxor drive was in and part of windows update was put on
the maxor, the maxor drive was not in the computer when i restarted and got
the problem and since have not been able to reboot.

now the maxor is in the window and i can not boot it from that drive. and
still get the restarts. i can get to the repair part when i boot from cd.


please help i do not want to have to re-install windows
