I'm going to keep trolling for an answer to what seems
like it ought to be a really easy question: Where can I
learn how to setup my system so that I have complete
access to it. This is a single-user computer. I want
password access to it, but once "in," I want to be able to
set it up my way.

Start, control panel, user accounts, choose the account, click: change the
account type, set it to administrator. Now you have admin rights and full
control over the computer.
You can also access the hidden administrator account via safe mode or
ctrl-alt-del twice at the welcome screen.

I am already listed as administrator in the user accounts
area of control panel. I still can't change settings in
Internet Explorer. When I try to do that, I am told to
contact my system administrator.

I've tried all the easy and obvious stuff, but I'm not
getting anywhere. That's why I asked for help with this --
a tutorial or white-paper or something that helps when
things DON'T happen correctly in the obvious ways.

That's how I got HERE. I've done everything obvious a
simple. I am listed as administrator in the profile, but
I still can't change settings in Internet Explorer. It
tells me to "contact system administrator," on a single
user computer . . .

Oh, your didn't say anything about a problem with internet explorer in your
first post. If you post exactly what your doing, what's happening, error
messages word for word, what settings your trying to change, xp version, I'm
sure someone will be able to help you. This could be a number of things.
